Subject: 20.03.03 PhD project on coarse-grained molecular dynamics of the bimolecular corona of nanoparticles, Groningen, The Netherlands
The Onck-group (in collaboration with the Aberg-group) at the University of Groningen in The Netherlands has an opening for a PhD student in the field of (coarse-grained) molecular dynamics. The university of Groningen is a top-100 university, (see https://www.rug.nl/about-us/where-do-we-stand/rankings) and one of the oldest universities in The Netherlands. Short description of the project: It is now broadly accepted that when nano-sized objects come in contact with biological fluids, biomolecules from the medium will adsorb to the object's surface creating what is called a 'biomolecular corona'. For nanomedicines, specifically, the formation of a corona has been associated with a lack of targeting efficiency. Experimentally, the biomolecular corona is well-studied, but our theoretical understanding has lagged behind. Here we aim to perform computer simulations on simple model systems to extract general features of corona formation. We are looking for an ambitious student that holds an MSc degree (or is in the final process of obtaining one) in (bio)physics, (bio)chemistry or a similar field that has affinity for computational modeling to understand the molecular behavior of proteins. Experience with (coarse-grained) molecular dynamics modeling will be advantageous. Deadline for application (based on a CV and short motivation letter) is March 21, 2020. Once selected, students will be invited to write their own research proposal on the topic described above, together with the prospective supervisors. This makes the position extra attractive as there are no predefined projects, so that the applicant can tailor the proposal to match his/her own interest and that of the host labs. We aim to start the PhD project after June 1 and before September 1, 2020. If you are interested, please contact Prof.dr. P.R. Onck at p.r.onck---rug.nl.
