Computational Chemistry/Machine Learning/AI Scientist

The School of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee is a world-class
academic institution with a reputation for the excellence of its research,
its high quality teaching and student experience, and the strong impact of
its activities outside academia. With 900 staff from over 60 countries
worldwide the School provides a dynamic, multi-national, collegiate and
diverse environment with state-of-the-art laboratory, technology and
teaching facilities.

The Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) is a fully integrated drug discovery
operation based within a world class Life Sciences research environment.
The DDU houses about 100 scientists structured in discipline focused teams
(Medicinal Chemistry, Structural Biology, Computational Chemistry,
Biophysical Screening, Biology, Compound Management, ADME/PK). Its remit
is to complement BioPharma activities by tackling both neglected diseases
(apicomplexan, tuberculosis and kinetoplastid disease) and validation of
novel targets and mechanisms across a range of potential therapeutic areas.
The DDU works to Biotech style philosophy and standards incorporating,
dynamic, goal driven project management based on Target Product Profiles
and Compound Selection Criteria. The project goals are therapeutic area
dependent but range from quality leads demonstrating disease model proof
of concept, through to pre-clinical candidates.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine/Deep Learning (ML,DL) are
revolutionising the drug discovery process and the way compounds are
optimised to achieve the desired biological activity and pharmacological
profile. The DDU Computational Chemistry Team is looking for a highly
motivated Scientist with Machine/Deep Learning experience.
The successful candidate will join a team focused on the development of a
platform integrating ML/DL/AI and physics based computational chemistry
methods to drive and accelerate compounds biological activity and
pharmacological profile optimisation.

The post is available immediately for two years.
Starting salary from 32,817 to 49,553 depending on experience.
A relocation allowance is available.

Necessary skills and experience:
Highly motivated, self-directed individuals professionally qualified
with a PhD in computational chemistry, bio/cheminformatics, or a related
topic or a BSc and significant experience in working in the field.
Experience in the application of AI/ML/DL methods to drug discovery
 Advance programming in Python
Strong scientific background with an understanding of the Drug Discovery
process

Ability to work independently, and in close collaboration with discovery
scientists as part of a team
Good time management, organizational and communication skills.
Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills

For Grade 8

The candidate will have had experience running projects and line
management experience Desirable Experience:
Experience in Chemoinformatics, Chemical Space enumeration and expansion
Experience in developing processes and tools into a flexible and
user-friendly platform web based tools development front/back-end
 Expertise in Multiparameter optimisation
Exposure to drug discovery projects Experience in hardware setup,
networking support, software deployment and configuration
 Working knowledge of statistical modelling

A few facts about The School of Life Sciences at Dundee:

The School of Life Sciences has over 900 research and support staff from
59 countries and external funding in excess of 40 million per year
Dundee has twice been named the best place to work in Europe in a poll
of scientists conducted by The Scientist magazine
The College of Life Sciences has been consistently rated 5-star
(the highest rating) by the UK national Research Assessment Exercise.
Dundee, set on the east coast of Scotland, lies in an area of outstanding
natural beauty, including large sandy beaches and challenging hills.

We are one of the UKs leading universities internationally recognised
for our expertise across a range of disciplines and research breakthroughs
in multiple areas, including science, medicine and engineering, amongst
many others.
Conveniently located on the banks of River Tay, our main city-centre campus
is at the heart of Dundee - an up-and-coming, friendly, compact and
affordable city with a rich heritage in design and technology.
Just a short walk from the V&A Museum of Design Dundee, were close to both
the train and bus stations. We also have campuses at Ninewells Hospital and
in Kirkcaldy which are easily accessible via local transport links.
The diversity of our staff and students helps to make the University of
Dundee a UK university of choice for undergraduate, postgraduate and
distance learning. Family friendly policies, staff networks for BME,
