The role is for a talented individual to lead CCDC's materials sciences team. The candidate would lead the existing team of research scientists and software engineers, building on a previous strong track record of delivery of science, software and consultancy services for the existing CSD-Materials user base.

Specifically, the team under the candidate's guidance will be responsible for maintaining key scientific partnerships within the Pharmaceutical and Agrochemical development sectors & academia worldwide and, in so doing, informing the production and execution of the CSD-Materials development roadmap.

The candidate would be responsible, with the team, for maximising the value of the CSD through delivery of cutting edge research in the field of knowledge based Materials Science. They would also be a member of the Senior Leadership Team at CCDC integrating the Materials Science vision within the overall CCDC strategic framework.

Job Title: Head of Materials Science Research & Development Group: Materials Science
Salary Band: TBD

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE

Leading Materials Science Research & Development. CCDC has a role for a talented individual to lead CCDC's materials sciences team. The candidate would lead an existing team of research scientists and software engineers, building on a previous strong track record of delivery of science, software and consultancy services for the existing CSD-Materials user base. Specifically, the team under the candidate's guidance will be responsible for maintaining key scientific partnerships within the Pharmaceutical and Agrochemical development sectors & academia worldwide and, in so doing, informing the production and execution of the CSD-Materials development roadmap.

Additionally, the candidate would be responsible, with the team, for maximising the value of the CSD through delivery of cutting edge research in the field of knowledge based Materials Science.

The successful candidate would be a member of the Senior Leadership Team at CCDC integrating the Materials Science vision within the overall CCDC strategic framework.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Leading a team of scientists and software engineers, developing the CCDC's Materials Science strategy.
  2. Providing expert input into the development of CSD-Materials that delights the industrial and academic user base.
  3. Ensuring organisational awareness of key developments and opportunities in the Materials Sciences area.
  4. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team at CCDC, integrate the Materials Science vision within the overall CCDC strategic framework.
  5. Management of relationships with key partners, particularly in the Pharmaceutical and Agrochemical development sectors, via the CCDC's Crystal Form Consortium, ADDoPT and other direct 1 to 1 partnerships. This would include arrangement of CSD System training, bespoke consultancy in solid form analysis and joint research projects.
  6. Be responsible for building and maintaining user communications with customers to allow alignment of Materials Science R&D with the needs of the customer.
  7. Be responsible for communicating feedback & agreeing Materials Science direction with in the CCDC Product Management framework.
  8. Maintaining the CCDC's strong place in the Materials Science research community worldwide.
  9. Present at conferences and publish high quality research papers in the field of Crystallography and Materials Science.

Candidate Profile

  • Higher university degree in chemistry, biochemistry, physics or pharmacy (PhD, DPhil.)
  • At least 5 years of working experience in pharmaceutical or agrochemical development sector or industrial materials development, with a proven track record in the application of structural data to solve product development challenges.
  • Strong teamworking and managerial skills, capable of developing the careers of colleagues.
  • Good working knowledge of current software tools for materials science prediction and modelling ideally with a focus on CSD knowledge-based approaches.
  • Excellent strategic and communication skills: Ability to think analytically, to formulate succinctly, to present clearly and to develop and maintain a strategic view.
  • Organisational skills: Ability to translate and negotiate between users and developers of software tools. Ability to self-organise & prioritise effectively.
