Job Description Medicines Discovery Catapult

Title: Cheminformatics + Bioinformatics Data Scientists
Reports to: CIO
Based at: Alderley Park, Cheshire
Salary: Competitive

Job purpose:
The Medicines Discovery Catapult is the first of its kind in the UK, a central hub for the UK's thriving life-science industry. It is one of eleven Catapult centres, established by Innovate UK to encourage innovation and growth in the UK's high-potential industrial sectors. The aim of the Catapults is to bring expertise, innovation and investment together to improve the pathway towards national and international commercial success for new discoveries and businesses.

Based at Alderley Park, the Medicines Discovery Catapult will collaborate with academia and industry to develop new approaches for discovering the medicines of the future. By pooling knowledge and sharing expertise, the Catapult and its partners will work together to identify approaches which are more predictive, efficient and of higher scientific and economic value than is currently available, striving to become world-leaders in the industry.

We are looking for the very best people to join the Medicines Discovery Catapult team in driving the UK to the forefront of commercial success for medicines discovery.

For our newly established Informatics group, we are looking for two innovative data scientists, one with a bioinformatics focus, and the second with cheminformatics, to make a significant contribution in our informatics development activities. By applying your expertise in bioinformatics/cheminformatics data analysis, algorithm and workflow development and use of machine learning approaches applied to chemical and biological data. Working alongside a team of other highly skilled data scientists applying the very latest approaches to drug discovery informatics and data science, and supported by industry-leading figures and mentors you will be well positioned to innovate and perform world-leading systems development and applied research.

Responsibilities

  • Develop large-scale bioinformatics/cheminformatics components of our technology platform.
  • Integrate public and partner data, and develop and perform analyses across these data.
  • Maintain cutting edge awareness of the bio/cheminformatics fields.
  • Play a key role in hands-on contribution to our UK-wide academic and SME drug discovery support.

Essential Qualifications and Experience
For both roles, we are seeking the following:

  • Programming in e.g. Python, JavaScript, java, web-services, and workflow tools (e.g. Pipeline Pilot/KNIME).
  • Database experience SQL, ideally also experience of MapReduce and NoSQL.
  • Proven track record of applying informatics-based techniques to solve drug discovery problems.

Cheminformatics Data Scientist
Expert knowledge of key technologies within the field of cheminformatics e.g. molecular descriptors, RDKit, chemical fingerprint methods, virtual screening, chemical toolkits, machine-learning methods; combined with experience of a wide range of cheminformatics resources e.g. PubChem, ChEMBL, ZINC, SciFinder.

Bioinformatics Data Scientist
Expert knowledge of gene and protein sequence analysis, structural biology, pathway analysis, impact of genetic variation, and protein modelling; combined with experience of a wide range of bioinformatics resources e.g. Ensembl, UniProt, Pfam, PDB, ModBase, Human Protein Atlas, KEGG.

Qualifications and Experience

  • PhD with relevant postdoctoral experience in a drug discovery environment.

Equal Opportunities Statement
