Post-Doctoral Fellow (Computational Chemistry and Physics), The Cyprus Institute

Closing date: 28 February 2017

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit science and technology institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research aims of the Cyprus Institute are represented by three research centers: the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CASTORC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), and the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic of the Institute's culture.

Description of the position
The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC) of CyI invites applications for a Post-doctoral Fellow specialized in atomistic computer simulations, statistical mechanics, molecular dynamics, quantum chemistry calculations and processing of large scale computation. The successful candidate will work on developing theoretical methodology and software (density functional theory, path integral and ring polymer molecular dynamics etc.) for atomistic simulation of various condensed phase dynamical processes (surface chemistry, heterogeneous catalysis, organic chemistry etc.).

  • Atomistic computer simulations
    • conduct research on atomistic computer simulations;
    • develop research objectives and proposals relevant to atomistic simulations;
  • Publications in peer review journals, conference talks and posters
  • Manage own research, with guidance from the supervisor;
  • Build internal contacts and participate in the network for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration between CyI and local and European partners; ability to travel;

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry, Theoretical and Computational Chemistry and/or Physical Chemistry with specializations in atomistic computer simulations, statistical mechanics, molecular dynamics, and quantum chemistry calculations
  • Expertise in programming languages such as Fortran, C or C++, MPI and Open MP
  • Familiarity with high performance computing
  • Good background and experience in statistical physics, real-time classical and quantum dynamics (preferably, path integrals and molecular dynamics) and skills in solving complex problems in computer simulations are expected
  • Ability to travel
  • Proficiency in oral and written English
  • Analytical problem solving ability
  • Good interpersonal and teamwork skills

Additional, preferred skills include:

  • Publications on atomistic computer simulations (especially molecular dynamics) are highly desirable
  • Advanced knowledge of HPC architectures, parallel programming and GPU programming.

The appointment will be for a fixed term of two years. The salary range will be commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the candidate.
