---------------------------------------- There is a list (maintained) of chemistry related lists: http://bionmr1.rug.ac.be/chemistry/overview.html Look there !!! The other compilations of lists are available from: http://www.gu.edu.au/gint/ozlists/othref.html ---------------------------------------- Generally, to subscribe to the list, send a message: SUBSCRIBE listname Firstname Lastname to the address of list managing software (i.e., almanac@some.machine, ListProc@some.machine, LISTSERV@some.machine, majordomo@some.machine), listserv@some.machine, etc. As usual, there are exceptions from this rule. For example, one of the largest sites for elec- tronic lists MAILBASE@mailbase.ac.uk suggests that you subscribe by send- ing JOIN listname Firstname Lastname to MAILBASE@mailbase.ac.uk. If none of them work work, skip the name portion portion and try again. If it still does not work try to contact the administrator at listname-request@some.machine or postmaster@some.machine. On joining the list you usually get the detailed information about list services and rules. It is a good idea to save this information for future reference. The unsubscription procedure also involves sending a message to a global address. In most cases, the UNSUBSCRIBE listname command, or in the case of LISTSERV and MAILBASE the SIGNOFF listname and LEAVE listname, respectively. Many lists allow only subscribers to post to the list. Posting is done by sending your message to the address listname@some.machine. There are many electronic lists whose topic is related to chem- istry. The compilation presented below resulted from searching vari- ous archives and a query posted to the several chemical newsgroups. There are several excellent documents available via the Internet on this topic. The chemistry related resources on Internet are collected by Dr. Gary Wiggins WIGGINS@INDIANA.EDU or WIGGINS@INDIANA.BITNET and distributed to various electronic archives. The most recent version of this list can be found at anonymous FTP/gopher gopher.cica.indiana.edu (CICA Research Anonymous FTP Archives(pub), chem, resource.XXX). Another valuable compilation of chemical resources can be found on anonymous FTP leon.nrcps.ariadne-t.gr in pub/chemistry direc- tory. The general compilations of electronic lists are also available. Di- ane K. Kovacs DKOVACS@KENTVM.KENT.EDU or DKOVACS@KENTVM.BITNET periodically releases the Directory of Scholarly Electronic Conferences which can be retrieved by sending a message with lines: GET ACADLIST FILEn (n = 1 to 9), GET ACADLIST INDEX and GET ACADLIST.README to LISTSERV@KENTVM.BITNET or LISTSERV@KENTVM.KENT.EDU. Another gen- eral index of LISTSERV electronic lists can be retrieved by sending a mes- sage GET LISTSERV LISTS to LISTSERV@BITNIC.BITNET. Yet another list can be retrieved from rtfm.mit.edu either via anonymous FTP or via e- mail from directory /pub/usenet/news.answers/mail/mailing-lists. The core of chemistry listing was supplied by list editors/maintainers. We are very grateful for all who responded to our query. The compilation represents the status of the lists in October, 1994. This collection is far from complete. For one thing, it is difficult to decide what is and what is not related to chemistry. Omissions may also be due to the fact that many discussion lists are private and do not seek publicity. In such cases, we simply did not find any references to them. We did not include lists which are run as a for-fee service. A modified version of this compilation will be kept in the archives of Computational Chemistry List and can be re- trieved from anonymous FTP on www.ccl.net from the directory /pub/chemistry/info/electronic-lists/chemistry-related-lists or by sending a message: select chemistry get info/electronic-lists/chemistry-related-lists quit to MAILSERV@ccl.net Please help in keeping this compilation current by sending announcements and changes to JKL jkl@ccl.net. The subscriptions and posting procedures are usually similar between different list managers and can be grouped in the following list. Each list has its administrative address which accepts subscription and unsubscrip- tion requests, and the distribution address for posting messages to all sub- scribers. LISTPROC To subscribe send the message: SUBSCRIBE listname Firstname Lastname to the administrative address LISTPROC@some.machine. To unsubscribe, send the message: UNSUBSCRIBE listname to LISTPROC@some.machine. To post, send your message to the distribution address listname@some.machine. LISTSERV To subscribe send the message: SUBSCRIBE listname Firstname Lastname to the administrative address LISTSERV@some.machine. The listname is the name of the list and Firstname and Lastname represent your first and last name respectively. To unsubscribe, send the message: SIGNOFF listname to administrative address LISTSERV@some.machine. To post, send your message to the distribution address listname@some.machine. MAILBASE To subscribe send a message to the administrative ad- dress: MAILBASE@mailbase.ac.uk containing a line: JOIN listname Firstname Lastname. To unsubscribe send the message: LEAVE listname to MAILBASE@mailbase.ac.uk. To post, send your message to the distribution address listname@mailbase.ac.uk. MAISER Same as for LISTPROC by the administrative address is: MAISER@FS4.IN.UMIST.AC.UK. MAJORDOMO To subscribe, send the message: subscribe listname to the administrative address majordomo@some.machine. To unsubscribe send the message: unsubscribe listname to majordomo@some.machine. To post, send your message to the distribution address listname@some.machine. UNIX To subscribe send a message to the administrative address: listname-request@some.machine stating clearly your name, e-mail address, and postal address and willingness to subscribe. To unsubscribe send the simi- lar message to the same address, but ask for unsubscription. Put a word subscription or unsubscription in the subject of your message. To post to the list send your message to the distribution address: listname@some.machine. Remember to place the subscription/unsubscription request/command within the body of your message (not a Subject:) since most automatic list subscribers/unsubscribers do not analyze the Subject: header line. It is generally considered unethical to post to the list if you are not an active subscriber. Besides, you may miss the most interesting responses which will go to the list. To enforce this rule many electronic lists will not accept messages from nonsubscribers. It is also important to check the rules of the list before you post. They should give you a scope of the list. Post only material which is related directly to the list topic. There are thousands of electronic lists and newsgroups, and most likely, there is a forum for each valid comment or question. PMD is made freely avail- able at this point to provide a flexible testing ground for advanced algorithms to all interested researchers.
