Since the 'rules' that one gets when signing on to this list clearly state that these kind of questions can and therefore should be asked to Jan Labanowsky (?; the coordinator), I second this motion. There is one catch, in that this forum was not created for these kinds of disapproval messages also. so someone could accuse us of doing what we disapprove of in others... I found it useful and (for me) it is not a problem to delete any unknown e-mail address request. I agree with Clifford Randall: now we produce a lot of noise. I think the original help file I received from Jan (the coordinator) is still valid: only if you have tryed all other ways (such as contact the local Postmaster), you can ask for e-mail. Moreover don't forget that there are many novice (as I am) on the list, and they are novice on both lists and Internet (I talk for myself). So it useful, sometimes, to know where I can reach the source of that program, the binary of ..., how to contact authors, etc.. Hence my vote is yes. I think all of us should try to reduce such requests, so the work of the coordinator(s) will be more easy. Do we have to start this all over again ? Apart from that, if this list wants to modify regulations, wouldn't Jan be willing to make the modifications ? Is it really a solution to immediately propose to replace somebody when you don't like the regulations that he adheres to ? I don't second your nomination of Michael Sean Jones at this time. To: chemistry@ccl.net Date: Tue, 12 Oct 1993 08:11:26 -0500 (CDT) Please, let us put an end to this subject of finding peoples addresses: The best ways to try are: (1) Dir. Assistance (local; foreign costs money), (2) NETFIND (3) X.500 gateway (4) IRC - Internet Relay Chat; this has always worked for me since there are people from all countries at IRC (pretty much all the time). I have had great success with (4) and people are quite friendly. If all else fails try SNAIL-MAIL. I have not failed so far with a combination of (1) through (4). Good luck to those address hunters and please, let us get back to Comp. Chem and modelling. Smith and Jim Gerland "Navigating the Internet: Let's go Gopherin'" is a two or three week, electronic mail, distance education course that will introduce the new and intermediate user of the Internet to the popular navigating tool--Gopher. The Internet Gopher, developed by the University of Minnesota, is a navigating tool that incorporates basic Internet services into one easy-to-use program. File transfer and remote login are simplified by Gopher; Gopher knows the remote machines' Internet addresses, thus relieving the user of the tedious chore of remembering and entering the sometimes encryptic Internet addressing schemes. This course will last for two or three weeks and will cover the basic connections to a Gopher, look at selected Gopher sites, create Gopher "bookmarks", and search "Gopherspace" with the help of the powerful program--Veronica. Information on different types of Gopher clients that are available and their primary differences will be explained, and installation and maintenance of a Gopher client and server will conclude the course. The course will consist of e-mail instructions and illustrations that can be read and followed, or participants can save the information to read at their own pace and location. Dates: October 18, 1993 through the beginning of November. Costs: Free To register for "Navigating the Internet: Let's go Gopherin'" sign up to the list gophern by sending an e-mail message to the listserv: listserv@ubvm.cc.buffalo.edu In the body of the e-mail message enter: subscribe gophern Yourfirstname Yourlastname This will automatically register you for the course. (Note the missing "i and g" in gophering) This course is intended for new, novice or intermediate Internet users. You should be able to read and use your e-mail and a TCP/IP connection is needed to actually use Gopher. Those on Internet services who do not have full Internet access may not receive all the benefits of the course. Also note that there will probably be more than 100 e-mail messages of varying lengths. Please consider your disk space and any e-mail costs before registering for the course. Richard J.
