I remember it very roughly like this: Hartree was in front of a judge or jury for some minor offence, and when asked what he does, his lawyer said that he solves self-consistent field equations; "and, Your honour, they do not converge!". Therefore, all charges were dropped. I was unsuccesful in googling up the story, so I assume at least one major component, probably more, of the story as I remember it is wrong; it might have been someone else (Hartree's father? Fock?), it might not have been at court, he might not have had a lawyer representative, and so on. The part I am quite sure of is that someone at some point got off easy because some equations did not converge :-) Anyone out there with a better memory? Hello All,

I am trying to find out details on an anecdote I heard many many years ago,= while still a student.

I remember it very roughly like this: Hartree was in front of a judge or ju= ry for some minor offence, and when asked what he does, his lawyer said tha= t he solves self-consistent field equations; "and, Your honour, they d= o not converge!". Therefore, all charges were dropped.

I was unsuccesful in googling up the story, so I assume at least one major = component, probably more, of the story as I remember it is wrong; it might = have been someone else (Hartree's father? Fock?), it might not have bee= n at court, he might not have had a lawyer representative, and so on. The p= art I am quite sure of is that someone at some point got off easy because s= ome equations did not converge :-)

Anyone out there with a better memory?

Cheers,
