In the total cost here one must also evaluate relative performance keeping in mind the cost of the rest of the system, cooler, motherboard, memory, disk, case, etc. With all these items being constant for comparing price/performance ration the cpu may be only a fraction of the cost of the whole system... i.e. one is comparing something related to x/(a+x) where x=cost of cpu and a = cost of the rest of the system across several cpus.. The Xeon was 30% faster than the opteron under G03, but the price was much more than +30%, Opterons servers were $1500 each, so cheap, Intel Xeon5520 were "brand new" then very expensive. Cheaper server means more servers for the same price hence more cooling, ...
